OVERVIEW
As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the City of Spruce Grove completed an LED lighting retrofit throughout the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre (TLC).
The TLC is an activity centre formed through cooperation of Parkland County, the Town of Stony Plain, and the City of Spruce Grove. Located in the west end of Spruce Grove, the 260,000 square foot facility features two NHL sized hockey rinks, a leisure ice surface, two indoor soccer fields, and an aquatic center that includes a 25-meter lane pool, a leisure pool with a play structure & water slide, a hot tub, and a steam room. It also contains a gymnasium, a fitness center with state-of-the-art training equipment, two fitness studios, and an indoor running track, a physiotherapy clinic, a restaurant and lounge, a children’s play center / daycare, and meeting rooms. The project was commissioned in September 2021.
APPROACH
The TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre lighting retrofit project included the replacement of metal halides, T8s, and halogens (1,352 in total), with 1,352 new LED highbays, downlights, strips, and pole-mounted lights. The LED lamps will provide higher lumen levels at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary.
RESULTS
The lighting retrofit resulted in a reduction of 295 tCO2/year and an annual energy cost savings of $53,379.17. There is a 66% GHG reduction from the existing system and a 6% reduction facility-wide from the baseline.
