Overview
As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the Town of Trochu completed multiple retrofits at the Trochu Swimming Pool. The retrofit involved upgrading the furnace to a higher efficiency model, replacing the existing 15 HP pool pump with a 10 HP pump, adding a variable frequency drive (VFD), and upgrading pool lights to LED.
The project was commissioned in December 2022.
Approach
Built in 1971, the Trochu Community Swimming Pool has a gross floor area of 2,600 ft2 and hosts a front lobby, mechanical/pump/filters room, two change rooms with showers, one public washroom, wading pool, spray park, main swimming pool, and a detached garage for storing chemicals, supplies, and pool items.
Results
The replacement resulted in a reduction of 12 tCO2/year and energy cost savings of $3,360.74/year. The project resulted in a 42% GHG reduction from the existing system and a 12% reduction facility-wide compared to the baseline.
The Town of Trochu is extremely pleased to play a part in reducing our carbon footprint and energy conservation measures. The original furnace, pump, and lighting in our pool were many years old and not very efficient. The MCCAC REC grant gave us the opportunity to decrease the energy used by our pool clients, residents, and visitors. It will help us to reduce operating costs. The grant was greatly appreciated to assist with replacement costs and afford us the ability to upgrade our heating system, pump efficiency and lighting.
