OVERVIEW

As part of the MCCAC’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM) Program, the City of Red Deer purchased a new fully electric Troops Motors Able XR utility vehicle used by the Public Works Division. The new vehicle will be used to service all rest stops and waste areas along the trail systems within the city limits.

This project was completed in October 2021.

APPROACH

The City was looking to replace their existing 2012 Kubota RTV500 with a new Electric Vehicle (EV) that will support the fleet greening initiative which is a part of the city’s Environmental Master Plan. Powered by a lithium battery, the long-range ABLE XR fills the gap between conventional low-speed vehicles and standard full sized pickup trucks. The robust towing and payload capacities of this vehicle makes it capable of supporting endless number of applications for the Public Works staff.

RESULTS

With this electric utility vehicle, the City’s fleet is helping to reduce the environmental impact by reducing fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, maintenance costs and even noise pollution.

“This unit supports our Environmental Master Plan and is a prime example of our efforts to green our fleet. An additional benefit to this battery electric vehicle is the reduced maintenance costs since electric motors have fewer moving parts so fewer things can break or wear out.” The unit was partially funded by Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC), a partnership of the Alberta Municipalities and Rural Municipalities of Alberta.
