OVERVIEW
As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the Town of Okotoks completed an LED lighting retrofit throughout the Pason Centennial Arenas.
It is a year-round, multi-use facility that includes 2 NHL-sized ice arenas—the Green Arena and the Gold Arena, a Leisure Arena and a number of multi-use rooms. It is also attached to the Foothills Centennial Centre. This facility plays host to a variety of events including sporting events, concerts, weddings, trade shows and conferences. The arena accommodates competitive and recreational hockey, figure skating, family and public skating, and organized group activities.
The project was commissioned in July 2021.
APPROACH
The Pason Centennial Arenas lighting retrofit project included the replacement of existing LED fixtures (67 in total), with equivalent low wattage (208 W to 139 W) LED fixtures/lamps. The new LED lamps will run at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary.
RESULTS
The lighting retrofit resulted in a reduction of 13 tCO2/year and an annual energy cost saving of $1,272.96 thus decreasing electricity costs. There is a 32% GHG reduction from the existing system and a 0.5% reduction facility-wide from the baseline.
“Projects like these are vital to implementing the Town’s Climate Action Plan and achieving our goal of carbon neutrality by 2050”
Mayor Tanya Thorn
