Overview
Over the summer of 2021, the Town of Millet completed construction of their new solar PV installation, a 31.68 kW solar PV system on the roof of the old Millet School, home of the new Civic Centre. The system comprises 88 solar modules and is conservatively estimated to generate 41,000 kWh per year, enough to power almost 6 average-sized homes per year. The system allows the Town of Millet to produce renewable energy, lower its carbon footprint, and lead by example in the community. The system was designed and installed by NuSolar and received a rebate through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Alberta Municipal Solar Program for $23,258.63.
Approach
This demonstration of environmental stewardship will be a beacon of positive change for the Town to rally around for generations to come. With the help of the MCCAC program, the system will not only preserve the planet, but the
energy generated will provide savings allowing the system to pay for itself in under a decade! The system will generate enough electricity to offset nearly 30 metric tons of CO2 per year, the equivalent of removing a little over 4 vehicles from the road! In the mention of vehicles, the Town is also installing a level 2 EV charger in the parking lot when the paving is completed in 2022. John Maude generously contributed financial aid to complete this clean energy & EV charger project to help Millet with the capital cost.
Results
It is clear to see the Town of Millet is doing its part in making a change for the climate. The Town hopes that this project will inspire other individuals, enterprises & municipalities to see the benefits of these projects and complete some of their own. The new Mayor of Millet Doug Peel is ecstatic about this initiative and is looking forward to seeing more clean energy projects in Millet.
We are beyond proud of this project with our new Millet Civic Centre that now houses our administration offices, new community hall and new library. I’ve personally looked at what impact we’ve had on the environment since the project went live and I believe we are lowering our Carbon footprint every day. This project and our new ice resurfacer show the community our ongoing commitment to the future.
