Bruderheim Climate Resilience Action Plan

The impacts of climate change could be numerous and diverse, giving rise to uncertain consequences, for infrastructure and services, property, the local economy and environment, and the health and lifestyles of citizens. To better prepare for these potential impacts, the Town of Bruderheim has prepared this Action Plan, which identifies a number of anticipatory measures to manage priority risks and opportunities expected to result from climate change over the next several decades.

Scope

Spatial scope – Geographic boundaries of the Town of Bruderheim, as well as critical lifelines outside of the municipal boundaries e.g. Town water supply sourced from North Saskatchewan River at Edmonton.

Operational scope – Potential community-wide impacts, which includes impacts to municipal infrastructure, property and services, as well as impacts to private property, the local economy, the health and lifestyle of residents and the natural environment.

Risks

12 climate-related risks.

4 risks judged to be priorities requiring immediate action – Stormwater and creek flooding, Freezing rain / Ice storm, Water supply shortage, Extreme wind storm.

Opportunities

4 climate-related opportunities – New crop opportunities, Increase in construction season, Reduced energy costs, Reduced road and sidewalk maintenance.

Actions

16 actions identified across each priority risk.

Social Equity

Consequences for heat wave risk – Public health impacts, particularly for vulnerable populations (infants and elderly).

Community Engagement

One day workshop with local stakeholders.

Implementation

Each action includes description of the action, total implementation costs (low – very high), timeframe for implementation (ongoing – long-term), and lead department or organization.
