The Town of Athabasca engaged Associated Engineering and All One Sky Foundation to develop an understanding of climate vulnerabilities and risks to Town owned infrastructure and assets. The purpose of this assessment was to conduct a climate-based risk analysis for the Town’s infrastructure and to summarize the highest-priority climate risks. In addition, the assessment also identified facilities that would benefit from additional assessment efforts.
Scope
The following Town assets and areas were included in the scope of this assessment: water, facilities, wastewater, roads, stormwater, parks, solid waste, and fleet. This project also included a community-wide risk assessment which considered the potential climate impacts to the natural environment, non-municipal assets and services, the economy, and the health and well-being of people in the community.
Risks
Risks to Town owned and operated assets include: Wildfire smoke, High winds, River flooding, Hail storm, & Hottest Days above 30 degrees C.
Risks from the community-wide risk assessment include: Prolonged drought, Wildfire Smoke, & Extended heat wave
Actions
The Plan outlines a series of general recommendations as well as a number of adaptation actions for each infrastructure area.
Community Engagement
Workshops with Town staff and engagement with other Town Departments and regional stakeholders.
