As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the Town of Cochrane completed an LED lighting retrofit throughout the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC).
It is a single-storey multi-use facility (350,000 square feet of space) built in 2001. With over 15,000 weekly users SLSFSC includes 3 NHL Size Ice Surfaces (plus the Original Cochrane Arena), Jayman BUILT Aquatic Centre (8-lane Lap Pool, Leisure Pool, Warm Water Therapy Pool, Hot Tub, Fireside of Cochrane Fitness Centre, Curling Centre, Full Indoor Soccer Turf, Indoor Running/Walking Track, Full Gymnasium, Multi-Purpose Space, Child Minding Centre, University of Calgary Gymnastics Facility, Martial Arts Centre, SLS Skate Sharpening and Gear Cleaning, Cochrane Sports Physiotherapy/ Massage and Seniors on the Bow.
The project was commissioned in May 2022.
The Family Sports Centre retrofit project included the replacement of 781 T5s. T8s and CFLs fixtures with an equivalent number of LED troffers and highbays. The new LED lamps will provide higher lumen levels at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary.
The lighting retrofit resulted in a reduction of 206 tCO2/year and an annual energy cost saving of $43,370.06 thus decreasing electricity costs. There is a 66% GHG reduction from the existing system and a 4% reduction facility-wide from the baseline.
With the grant opportunities, the cost savings, the environmental benefits it seems like a no-brainer.Councillor Morgan Nagel
Unlike a few years ago when there was plenty of grant money for recycling and we know that it’s kind of dried up, I view this opportunity and these opportunities as having much more longevity. I’m excited about being able to support option one as it relates to the Spray Lakes Center. It’s a great move.Councillor Alex Reed
