OVERVIEW

As part of the Electric Vehicle Charging Program (EVCP), the Town of Coronation now has six new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, at two locations within the Town.

  • Location One – Coronation Arena
  • Four level 2 charging stations (4 plugs total)
  • Location Two – Coronation Community Hall
  • Two level 2 charging stations (2 plugs total)

The new level 2 chargers are capable of outputting approximately 11.5 kW of power, which means they can charge most EVs from near empty to 100% capacity in 8 – 10 hours. All six of chargers are for public use and are free to use for the time being.

The Town received $59,800 rebate through the EVCP program help offset the total cost of the project.

This project was funded by the Government of Alberta and Natural Resources Canada.

APPROACH

The Town of Coronation is located approximately 175 kilometers East of Red Deer and has a population of roughly 900 people. The installation of the six EV charging stations is a valuable addition to Alberta’s EV charging network. These stations are some of the only located in East – Central Alberta and will play a key role in providing charging to visitors and residents.

The Town hopes that the addition of the six charging stations will potentially draw EV drivers in to explore the rural community. These stations are also a great step forward for the Town in promoting sustainability and a greener future.

Electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities in Alberta’s countryside can be life-saving by offering charging points in isolated areas. They serve as vital support in emergency situations for charging electric vehicles, ensuring that individuals are not stranded in rural parts of the province. Additionally, these stations may promote the use of EVs locally, maintaining the mobility of residents and visitors alike, and potentially drawing more people to possibly settle and explore our small rural community, enhancing tourism and residency prospects.
