OVERVIEW

As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the Town of Pincher Creek completed multiple retrofits at the Multi-Purpose Facility. The retrofit involved installing a new Building Management system (BMS), variable frequency drives (VFDs) on both the supply and return fans (10 horsepower each) and insulating the hot water pipes. The recreation facility (Multi-Purpose facility and Memorial Arena) with an approximate area of 57,117 ft2 includes Pool, Gym and Library with a separate Arena.

The project was commissioned in April 2022.

APPROACH

The Multi-Purpose Facility had an obsolete BMS that only covered certain HVAC systems with limited ability to provide efficient operation. The new upgraded system will monitor all mechanical equipment throughout the facility with potential energy savings achieved through the decreased operation of the ventilation units (further supported through installing VFDs on supply and return fans), and tighter control of heating and cooling terminal devices at the units based on the space conditions. Also, insulating the exposed valves, strainers and other fittings on the hot water loops will reduce the waste heat resulting in lower boiler operating hours.

RESULTS

Multiple retrofits resulted in a reduction of 36 tCO2/year and an energy cost savings of $7,256.94/year. The project resulted in a 6% GHG reduction from the existing system and a 4% reduction facility-wide compared to the baseline.

“We are excited to continue pushing forward in emissions reductions, and of course, the cost savings of this project will help our department continue to develop and offer high-quality programming. We are very thankful for all the help the MCCAC has extended!”
