Overview

As part of the MCCAC’s Electric Vehicle Charging Program (EVCP), the Village of Waskatenau installed electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the following facility for public use. These are the first EV charging stations to be installed in the Village.

  • Two Siemens 11.5 kW level 2 stations with one plug on each charger at Village Community Centre

The project was completed in March 2023 and was funded through the MCCAC’s Electric Vehicle Charging Program with funding provided by the Government of Alberta and Natural Resources Canada.

Approach

The chargers will provide service to many visitors, including trail users, shoppers, conference attendees, wedding, funeral and celebration event attendees, sports participants and their audiences, as well as visiting professionals. By offering this service, the village community will be a choice location for the above users, serving their unique driving needs and continuing village renewable energy aspirations.

The EV charger project will reinforce the community’s commitment to renewables and greenhouse gas reductions. This project is one of four applications from the region, to address the lack of EV services in the Smoky Lake Region and northeast Alberta.

The name of our village [Wah-set-in-a] comes from a Cree word meaning ‘opening in the riverbank’. As the western gateway and a service center to the picturesque Smoky Lake, Lakeland, and Kalyna tourism regions, Waskatenau is well-placed to welcome visitors travelling by EV from the greater Edmonton area and beyond.
