Overview

Lethbridge County made a significant move towards energy efficiency by undertaking a lighting retrofit at the Lethbridge County Administration Building. By participating in the Community Energy Conservation program, the County secured a rebate to help fund the purchase and installation of 556 high-efficiency LED light fixtures throughout the building. This retrofit has resulted in markedly lower electricity consumption and reduced operating costs. The project is projected to save the County approximately $10,576 annually.

Approach

Partnering with the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, the County prioritized upgrading outdated, inefficient lighting with energy-efficient LED fixtures. The upgrades were designed not only to reduce energy costs but also to improve lighting quality for visitors and staff.

Results

The new LED lighting is projected to cut electricity consumption by about 79,800 kWh annually, reflecting substantial energy savings thanks to improved operational efficiency. Furthermore, this retrofit will reduce the Town’s carbon footprint by approximately 39 tonnes of CO2 each year, which adds up to an estimated 325 tonnes over the lifetime of the fixtures. The new lighting system reduces emissions by 52% compared to the previous system and 24% across all energy use in the building. This project represents a meaningful contribution to the Town’s sustainability goals and commitment to environmental stewardship.

“We’re grateful for the support from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, which made this retrofit possible. By leveraging grant funding, we’re able to make smart upgrades that lower costs, improve energy efficiency, and support long-term sustainability in our organization.”
