Greenhouse gas emissions reductions for this project are calculated based on Alberta’s Carbon Offset Emission Factors Handbook Version 3.1

OVERVIEW

As part of the Action Centre’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM) Program, the City of Calgary added six new electric Engo Ice Wolf ice resurfacers to its fleet and received a rebate of $294,338.71. The new electric ice resurfacers will be used in arenas throughout the City, replacing compressed natural gas units from 2014. The new electric units will have a life of roughly 10 years.

This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.

APPROACH

The new electric ice resurfacers will be used in arenas throughout the City, replacing compressed natural gas units from 2014. The new electric unit will have a life of roughly 10 years.

RESULTS

The new ice resurfacers will have lower maintenance costs, are quieter to operate, and do not emit any GHG emissions which improves the indoor air quality for arena staff, patrons and players. The ice resurfacers are another step forward toward transitioning to electric vehicles by joining the City’s growing fleet of fully electric mobile assets including scissor lifts, forklifts, small utility vehicles, and passenger cars.

These electric ice resurfacers are part of our growing fleet of 100+ green vehicles and equipment technologies. By incorporating fully electric and other low carbon technologies into our operations we are reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contributing to the City’s Climate Strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Majid Asefi, Director

With these six new electric ice resurfacers, the City will have a total of eight emission-free machines smoothing the ice at our arenas. So far, these newer, greener models have lower preventative maintenance costs, are quieter to operate and do not emit emissions which improves the indoor air quality for athletes, spectators and operators.
