City of Spruce Grove – Ford Escapes & Zamboni

OVERVIEW

As part of the MCCAC’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM) Program, the City of Spruce Grove purchased a new fully electric Zamboni and two Ford Escape PHEVs.  The City received $64,000 from the MCCAC to offset the roughly $300,000 cost of the entire project

This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.

APPROACH

The new ice resurfacer will be used at the nearly complete Civic Centre, while the two Ford PHEVs will be used throughout the City. 

RESULTS

The new electric Zamboni and Ford PHEVS boast several advantages compared to traditional ICE vehicles:

1. Reduced operational costs – EVs/PHEVs are more efficient and cheaper to operate.
2. Reduced maintenance costs – EVs/PHEVs have fewer moving parts and therefore maintenance.
3. Reduced indoor impact – The electric Zamboni will not produce any emission while in use indoors which is beneficial to people within the Centre.
4. Reduced environmental impact – The electric Zamboni produces no GHGs during operation, and the Ford Escapes produce less GHGs during operation.

This new Zamboni will be a welcome addition to our fleet and will certainly be kept busy once the new Civic Centre is open next year,” said Mayor Jeff Acker. “I’d like to thank the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre for the funding for this piece of equipment, which also aligns with one of the themes in Council’s Strategic Plan, which is Environmental Sustainability for our community
