OVERVIEW
As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, Foothills County installed a REALice system at the Scott Seaman Sports Rink. The facility includes a single ice surface, a walking track, and two multi-purpose rooms. The project was completed in December 2021.
APPROACH
This newly installed REALice system will help to reduce the costs of heating the water used to resurface the ice as well as the electricity costs associated with cooling the ice following resurfacing. This system eliminates the need for hot water when building and resurfacing ice by removing micro air bubbles from the incoming water resulting in lower natural gas consumption from water heaters and a decreased load on compressors.
RESULTS
The REALice installation resulted in a reduction of 29 tCO2/year and an energy cost saving of $4,720.51/year. The system enabled the water heater setpoint temperature to be dropped from 160 degrees F to 85 degrees F. The project resulted in an 11% GHG reduction from the existing system and a 4% reduction facility-wide from the baseline.
“In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, Foothills County is pleased to implement this energy-efficient REALice device at Scott Seaman Sports Rink. We continue to work with our Municipal Energy Manager to find ways to do our part with ongoing climate concerns.”
