Overview
The Town of Slave Lake took an important step toward energy efficiency by participating in the Community Energy Conservation (CEC) program. The Town received a rebate to support the purchase and installation of 37 high-efficiency LED light fixtures throughout the parking lot and exterior of the Slave Lake Multi-Rec Centre (MRC). This retrofit has significantly lowered electricity consumption, reduced operating costs, and minimized outdoor light pollution. The project is expected to save the Town approximately $4,800 annually.
Approach
Partnering with the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, the Town prioritized upgrading outdated, inefficient lighting with energy-efficient LED fixtures. The upgrades were designed not only to reduce energy costs but also to improve lighting quality for visitors and staff during the long, dark winter months, enhancing safety and comfort.
Results
The new LED lighting is projected to cut electricity consumption by about 25,000 kWh annually, reflecting substantial energy savings thanks to improved operational efficiency. Furthermore, this retrofit will reduce the Town’s carbon footprint by approximately 12.5 tonnes of CO2 each year, which adds up to an estimated 105 tonnes over the lifetime of the fixtures. This project represents a meaningful contribution to the Town’s sustainability goals and commitment to environmental stewardship.
“These upgrades demonstrate the Town’s commitment to investing in projects that improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and support environmental sustainability. We are grateful to MCCAC’s funding supporting projects that benefit both our community and the environment.”
