OVERVIEW

As part of the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities program the Town of St. Paul purchased a new fully electric Olympia Model E ice resurfacer. The Town received a $50,000 rebate from the MCCAC to help cover the roughly $178,500 purchase price.

This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.

APPROACH

The new electric ice resurfacer will be used at the Clancy Richard Arena. The new model will replace a dated combustion engine resurfacer. This transition underscores the town’s commitment to becoming a more environmentally friendly community.

RESULTS

This transition not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also offers economic benefits by reducing maintenance costs. The town can expect:

  1. Lower operating costs as electric ice resurfacers are substantially more efficient compared to natural gas or propane powered units.
  2. Lower maintenance costs as electric ice resurfacers have fewer moving parts.
  3. Reduced GHG emission as electric ice resurfacers do not produce any GHG emissions during operation.
  4. Improved indoor air quality as no exhaust will be produced during operation.

“By transitioning to EV, the Town is continuing its journey of reducing GHG emissions. Aside from the economic benefit, zero emissions result in cleaner air for our staff, community members and recreational users of the arena.”
