OVERVIEW
As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the Town of Taber completed an LED lighting retrofit throughout the Aquafun Centre.
The Aquafun Centre is one of the finest and most varied aquatic leisure facilities in Southern Alberta. Aquafun Centre is an aquatic leisure facility that includes a 200-ft waterslide, a children’s play lagoon, hot tub, sauna, steam room, and a 5-lane swimming pool. The existing system utilizes a combination of fixtures to illuminate the space. The Centre replaced all existing lighting fixtures with equivalent LED lamps.
The project was commissioned in June 2021.
APPROACH
The Aquafun Centre lighting retrofit project included the replacement of 125 T8s and metal halides fixtures to 125 new LED highbays, troffers, and wallpack fixtures. The LED lamps will provide higher lumen levels at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary.
RESULTS
The lighting retrofit resulted in a reduction of 24 tCO2/year and an annual energy cost saving of $4,969.14 thus decreasing electricity costs. There is 56% GHG reduction from the existing system and 3% reduction facility-wide from the baseline.
“The Town is appreciative of the funding from both the MCCAC and Farm Credit Canada’s AgriSpirit Fund that allowed us the opportunity to upgrade our facilities.”
Andrew Prokop, Mayor, Town of Taber
“We are grateful to be able to upgrade the lighting in two of our recreation facilities using these grants. These upgrades will not only help reduce operational costs for the municipality but will also help our facilities become efficient for years to come.”
Dawn Phillips,, Director of Recreation
