Greenhouse gas emissions reductions for this project are calculated based on Alberta’s Carbon Offset Emission Factors Handbook Version 2.0

OVERVIEW

As part of the MCCAC’s Recreation Energy Conservation (REC) program, the Town of Whitecourt installed door sweeps, pipe insulation and high efficiency hand dryers at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre.

• Pipe Insulation: Installing insulation on around the pipe fittings will reduce heat loss, resulting in reduced energy consumption. Two-inch thick pipe insulation for all uninsulated heating water supply pipe fittings.

• Door Seals & Sweeps: Replacing all the damaged and worn door seals and sweeps for the building. Over time the weather stripping will wear down and gaps will become visible around the perimeter of exterior doors. It increases the infiltration/exfiltration rate of building causing loss of conditioned air, resulting in longer run times on HVAC equipment. They are expected to last from 5-10 years depending on use and should be periodically inspected and replaced as needed.

• Hand Dryer Replacement: Replace existing electric hand dryer with energy efficient hand dryers.

This project was completed in July 2021.

APPROACH

Whitecourt has completed several energy efficiency projects at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre. The projects, which were identified in an energy audit completed at the facility in 2019, included the addition of heat transfer fluid enhancement to all water/glycol heating fluids to reduce energy consumption, and the installation of low cost ECM’s (pipe insulation, door seals and sweeps, hand dryers) to reduce energy and water consumption. Both projects were completed with funding assistance from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre which supports Alberta municipalities in addressing climate change by reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.

RESULTS

This project will save an estimated 26 tonnes of greenhouse gases per year, reducing the emissions and maintenance by 2% and has a payback time of only one year.

“Without the Action Centre’s support, these projects would not have been possible. Completing the projects at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre will reduce energy and water consumption, leading to operational savings.”
