The Government of Alberta has provided funding to the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) to administer the Municipal Electricity Generation Program. This $3 million initiative helps municipalities reduce energy costs and emissions. Starting September 24, 2024, communities can apply for up to $500,000 in funding to install microgeneration systems on municipal buildings. The program will run until March 2026 or until funds are fully allocated.
Key program details:
- Lowers operational costs and emissions for community buildings like recreation centers, town halls, and libraries
- Provides rebates for solar, combined heat and power or other microgeneration systems
- Covers up to 30% of pre-GST project costs through per-watt incentives
- Includes eligible expenses like equipment, materials, labor, installation, and project management
“This investment will help communities invest in practical upgrades that will also help save taxpayers money,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas.
“We are thrilled to announce this program that empowers Alberta municipalities to take control of their energy future,” said Trina Innes, Executive Director of MCCAC. This initiative builds on MCCAC’s track record of enabling over 1,000 clean energy projects across Alberta, creating jobs and generating significant energy cost savings and emissions reductions.
