OVERVIEW

As part of the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities program the Town of Canmore purchased three new fully electric vehicles to add to their municipal fleet. The Town received a total rebate of $42,000.00 ($14,000.00 per vehicle) for two new Hyundai Kona’s and Chevrolet Bolt.

This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.

APPROACH

In 2020 the Town completed an Electric Vehicle Feasibility Study, also through the MCCAC’s EVM program, and purchased the three new EVs based upon study recommendations. The new EVs will be used to replace aging internal combustion engine fleet vehicles.

RESULTS

This project affirms Canmore’s climate goals, demonstrates municipal leadership and will reduce operating costs. The Town plans to use the new EVs for work trips within the Town and for longer trips into Calgary. The new EVs will have lower operating costs, reduce GHG emissions, and will be quieter on Town streets.

Thanks to the MCCAC’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM) Program, the Town of Canmore has electrified almost half of our administrative fleet. The funding from the EVM program made the upfront cost of replacing three aging fleet vehicles with electric models comparable with purchasing internal combustion engine vehicles. Our staff enjoy driving the new EVs, we are ‘walking the talk’ with our climate change goals, and we’ll be saving money on an ongoing basis from reduced fuel and maintenance needs
