OVERVIEW

As part of the Action Centre’s Community Energy Conservation Program, the Town of St. Paul has replaced three outdated furnaces with more energy efficient models. The new furnaces were installed at the St. Paul Curling Rink and commissioned in 2024. This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.

Approach

The new furnaces replaced three less efficient and outdated units. The new condensing furnaces have a capacity of 132,000 BTU/hr each and are 96% efficient, being able to respond to changing building temperatures quickly and more effectively. As a result, the new furnaces will reduce natural gas consumption and heating costs.

Results

The installation of the new furnaces resulted in a reduction of 3.1 tCO2/year and an energy cost savings of $258.41/year. The project resulted in a 6.3% GHG reduction from the previous system and a 2.2% reduction facility-wide compared to the baseline.

“The Town of St. Paul is extremely grateful for the support provided by MCCAC, which has made this important project possible. By investing in these energy-efficient furnaces, we are not only improving the comfort of our curling club, but we are also taking a significant step towards reducing our environmental footprint.”

Steven Jeffery, CAO

“We know how important curling rinks are to communities and how much energy they can use. These furnace upgrades will help lower power bills while reducing emissions, saving taxpayers money and providing fun for St. Paul families.”

Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas
