The results from this calculator are the cost saving and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction potential of purchasing a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and/or an electric vehicle (EV) in place of a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle within the Province of Alberta.

This savings calculator is purely a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings will vary with the use of each vehicle. The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) and Alberta Municipalities have no claims towards the accuracy of the results of this tool. Actual GHG emission and fuel cost savings will vary depending on factors such as road and weather conditions, driving behaviours, use of regenerative braking, charging multiple times per day, vehicle maintenance, battery age, and GHG intensity of the electricity grid.

Lifetime Cost Analysis

The graph below outlines the cost of ownership of the two vehicles selected, based upon the driving data provided. Lifetime costs are calculated based on annual fuel and maintenance costs, and the initial purchase prices of the vehicles. The intersection point of the two lines is the breakeven point. This is where the cost of ownership of the ICE vehicle overtakes the PHEV/BEV. In some scenarios the breakeven point may be upon purchase, or in others there may be no breakeven point.

Lifetime Cost Analysis

GHG Emission Comparison

The graphs below compare the annual and lifetime expected greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) associated with operating the two vehicles selected. The default results are displayed in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) and are based upon the Government of Alberta’s Carbon Offset Emission Handbook grid intensity factor (tCO2e/kWh). This factor is a combined value that accounts for all electricity generation in Alberta (natural gas, coal, solar, wind, hydro, etc.) and each source’s associated GHG intensity. This factor will decrease as more renewable energy sources are added to the grid and emitting sources are paired with carbon capture.

The “Live Grid Intensity” results are based upon a real time snapshot of which generation sources are producing electricity in Alberta. The data displayed in the chart is sourced from the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), and shows which sources are generating electricity and how much they are generating in real time. The “Live Grid Intensity” results are likely different than the default results, which are based upon the average grid factor. The live results give a snapshot of what the associated GHG emissions would be if you plugged your BEV/PHEV in at this moment. Depending on the time of day, season and which sources are producing electricity, the associated annual and lifetime GHG emissions may be less or greater than the default average results.

GHG Emissions

Greenhouse Gas (GHG): Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere by absorbing and re-radiating heat from the sun, this process consequently increases the temperature of the earth. A common GHG is carbon dioxide (CO₂).

The two graphs below compare the annual and lifetime expected greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) associated with operating the two vehicles selected. However, the results below are based upon a real time snapshot of which generation sources are producing electricity in Alberta. You can now see what the associated GHG emissions would be if you plugged your BEV/PHEV in at this moment. Depending on the time of day, season and which sources are producing electricity, the associated annual and lifetime GHG emissions may be less or greater than the annualized average value. A breakdown of which sources are generating electricity at this moment can be seen in the pie chart, data is sourced from the Alberta Electric Systems Operator (AESO).
