Climate Change Risk and Vulnerability Assessment

The purpose of this assessment is to conduct a climate-based risk analysis for the Town’s infrastructure and to summarize the highest-priority climate risks. In addition, the assessment also identified facilities that would benefit from additional assessment efforts.

Scope

The assessment was conducted on the following assets and areas: Water; Wastewater; Stormwater; Solid Waste; Airport; Buildings/Facilities; Roads; Parks, Trails, Sports Field; and Fleet.

The scope of the assessment also includes community-wide social, health, and local economy impacts.

Risks

Five highest risks for the Town area include: Hottest days (above 30C), Short duration intense rainfall/Overland flooding, Wildfire and smoke, High winds, and River flooding/Increase in lake water levels.

The highest rated climate hazards from the community-wide risk assessment include: Loss of/reduced road access during winter, Wildfire smoke (air transport disruption), Wildfire smoke (health impacts), Wildfire smoke (reduced recreation), and Increased space cooling costs.

Actions

The plan provides a number of potential cross-cutting adaptation actions applicable to all departments.

Social Equity

Adaptation action planning includes considerations for vulnerable community members most at risk.

Community Engagement

Workshops with Town staff and stakeholders.

Implementation

Recommended next steps include prioritizing actions for implementation, and cross-cutting discussion & information sharing.
