Red Deer conducted a multi-facility retrofit in 2014, which included the Collicutt Centre, Recreation Centre and Kinex, Kinsmen, and Red Deer Arenas. With annual cost savings expected to be $54,098, the project will pay itself back in only 3 years. The retrofit will also save the City 2,482 GJ of energy and 279 tonnes of greenhouse gases annually.

Collicutt Centre

The Collicutt Centre, a 250,000 ft2recreation and wellness complex, underwent an extensive lighting retrofit. Fixtures in all areas of the building were updated, including the arena, pool, fitness area, fieldhouse, fitness area, running track, and soccer pavilions. Existing metal halide lights ranging from 220 to 1000W were replaced with a combination of T5HO high bays and LED lights. The improvements will bring electricity consumption down dramatically, saving 329,200 kWh per year. New weatherstripping and sealing were also installed along exterior doors and windows.

Kinex, Kinsmen, and Red Deer Arenas

In each of the arenas, the existing hot water heaters were replaced and new weatherstripping was installed. The existing hot water ranks, ranging from 55-60% efficiency, were replaced with new condensing models at 90% efficiency.

Red Deer Recreation Centre

In the Recreation Centre, weatherstripping was replaced to minimize air and heat loss.
