OVERVIEW

As part of the Electric Vehicle Charging Program (EVCP), the Town of Calmar now has a new DC fast charging station at the Mike Karbonik Arena. This is the Town’s first EV charging station and will be available for use by the public.

DC fast chargers, also known as level 3 chargers, use both high voltage and current in order to charge EVs much quicker than level 2 chargers. The Hypecharge ABB 50 kW charging station installed at the Mike Karbonik Arena will be able to charge an EV from roughly 20% battery capacity to 80% in 40 to 50 minutes.

This fast charger is a great addition to the charging network within the Edmonton area. Calmar is located roughly 50 kilometers southwest of Edmonton.

This project was funded by the Government of Alberta and Natural Resources Canada.

APPROACH

The Town of Calmar is always looking for opportunities to support residents and local businesses. With the new EV charging station EV drivers will have the opportunity to walk down Main Street, enjoy local restaurants, and visit local shops and businesses.

This project will help reduce the Town’s carbon footprint and sets a positive example as more Albertans begin to drive EVs. This project is not only environmentally friendly but will also help boost the local economy.

As the face of our environment is changing and the focus to reduce our own carbon footprint on the global spectrum is in the forefront, the Town of Calmar is excited to partner with the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre in conjunction with Alberta Municipalities to fund the installation of our first electric vehicle charging station. This opportunity allows us to demonstrate our adaptation to a changing environment, while still providing a boost to our local economy.
