OVERVIEW

As part of the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities program the Town of Legal purchased a new fully electric Zamboni 450 Electric ice resurfacer. The Town received a $50,000 rebate from the MCCAC to help cover the roughly $167,450 purchase price.

This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.

APPROACH

The new ice resurfacer will be used within the Legal Arena & Curling Rink. The new unit will replace an older natural gas-powered unit. This transition underscores the Town’s commitment to becoming a more environmentally friendly community.

RESULTS

Over the lifespan of the electric Zamboni, the Town expects to see additional cost savings with a reduction in fossil fuel usage and lower maintenance costs due to the longer life expectancy of the lithium-ion battery and as a result, ice resurfacing at the Legal Arena will safer, more efficient and cost effective.

Our Council and staff are committed to sustainable operations and working towards our greenhouse gas reduction targets. The Legal Arena and Curling Rink is hub of our community; therefore it is important to provide reliable equipment for service levels we are all privileged to enjoy. The electric Zamboni will reduce emissions and provide for a healthier environment in our recreation facility. I look forward to seeing the new Zamboni 450 in action.
