Bashaw Arena Lighting Retrofit

OVERVIEW

As part of the MCCAC’s Recreation Energy Conservation (REC) program, the Town of Bashaw completed a lighting retrofit of the Bashaw Arena, updating over 180 lamps and fixtures to LED equivalents. The project was completed in January 2021.

APPROACH

The Bashaw Arena lighting retrofit project included the replacement of 25 metal halide, 14 incandescent, 77 T12, 8 fluorescent, 9 pot light, and 18 exit sign fixtures throughout the facility with 175 LED equivalents and occupancy sensors. The LED lamps will provide higher lumen levels at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary.

RESULTS

Due to the brighter LEDs, the Bashaw Arena now gets more light out of fewer fixtures, resulting in 9 fixtures being permanently removed and a 75% reduction in the facility’s lighting energy use. This retrofit is estimated to save 24 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equating to a 17% reduction in the facility’s carbon footprint.
