Overview

As part of the Community Energy Conservation (CEC) program, the Town of Coalhurst has received a rebate towards the purchase and installation 96 LED light fixtures and three high efficiency furnaces. The new lights and furnaces were installed in the Coalhurst & District Community Centre and will reduce the Town’s annual electricity and natural gas consumption. The estimated annual savings for electricity and natural gas are 9,859 kWh and 168 GJ respectively.

Approach

The Town approached MCCAC to complete the project with the intent to replace dated equipment, reduce energy usage, reduce GHG emissions, and save money. The improved lighting and furnaces will positively impact Community Centre users.

Results

The new LED lights and furnaces will save the Town approximately $2,400 dollars per year due to their lower operating costs. Additionally, the Town can expect to reduce their annual GHG emissions by around 13.5 tCO2 per year, which a positive impact on their overall environmental footprint. This project results in a 30% GHG reduction facility wide.

“The three furnaces that were replaced in the Community Centre were more than 20 years old and the furnace from the Public Works shop was from the 1970s. This equipment, among others, was nearing end of life and needed replacement soon. So, to have funding support from the CEC program was not only timely, but also very much appreciated by myself and Council, and by Coalhurst as a whole. This program is a win-win-win for the environment, the Town, and the MCCAC’s mandate of helping municipalities reduce emissions and facility operational costs, while also making facility users more comfortable in these spaces.”
