Overview
Over the summer of 2021, the Town of Strathmore completed the construction of their new municipal office building which included the installation of a 73.45 kW solar PV system on the roof. The system comprises 165 solar modules and is conservatively estimated to generate 79,226 kWh per year. The energy generated will offset a portion of the electricity consumed at the new office and allow the Town of Strathmore to produce renewable energy, lower its carbon footprint, and lead by example in the community. The system was designed and installed by SkyFire Energy and received a rebate through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Alberta Municipal Solar Program for $54,368.75 which covered 45% of the project costs.
Approach
This project was first initiated in the spring of 2021 and was fully completed later in the summer of the same year.
Results
The project will reduce the municipality’s greenhouse gas emissions by 45.16 tonnes of CO2e per year, equivalent to removing 13 passenger vehicles from the road.
Strathmore is one of the sunniest communities in Canada. Building solar projects into our facilities to harness this energy is a smart decision. I’m proud of this project and grateful for the funding contributed through the Alberta Municipal Solar Program.
