OVERVIEW
As part of the MCCAC’s Recreation Energy Conservation (REC) program, the Town of Picture Butte completed a lighting retrofit of the North County Recreation Complex, updating over 200 fixtures to LED equivalents. The project was completed in December 2020.
APPROACH
The North County Recreation Complex lighting retrofit project included the replacement of 241 T8, T12, and metal halide fixtures throughout the facility with 201 LED equivalents. The LED lamps will provide higher lumen levels at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary.
RESULTS
Due to the brighter LEDs, the North County Recreation Complex now gets more light out of fewer fixtures, resulting in 40 fixtures being permanently removed. This retrofit is estimated to save 28 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year, an estimated 6% reduction in the facility’s carbon footprint, and a 50% reduction in emissions from lighting equipment.

Here’s what Keith Davis, CAO with the Town of Picture Butte had to say about the project and participating in the Recreation Energy Conservation Program:
“The Town is excited for this improvement to our arena. It was made possible by the grants being offered by MCCAC. We will continue to support initiatives that help municipalities reduce their overall costs and become more efficient and better stewards of our environment.”
