Overview
As part of the Community Energy Conservation (CEC) program, the Town of Coalhurst has received a rebate towards the purchase and installation 21 LED light fixtures, two infrared heaters, and a high efficiency furnace. The new lights, infrared heaters, and furnace were installed in the Coalhurst Public Works Shop. As the new lights and heating system are much more efficient than the previous systems, the Town can expect to save around 2,771 kWh of electricity and 163 GJ of natural gas annually.
Approach
The Town approached MCCAC to complete the project with the intent to replace dated equipment, reduce energy usage, reduce GHG emissions, and save money. The improved lighting and heating systems will have a positive impact on Town staff, especially in the winter.
Results
With the new LED lights, infrared heaters, and high efficiency furnace, the Town will save around $2,800 dollars per year. Additionally, the Town can expect to reduce their annual GHG emissions by around 9.6 tCO2 per year. This is a great step by the Town in reducing the environmental footprint and creating a more sustainable future.
“The three furnaces that were replaced in the Community Centre were more than 20 years old and the furnace from the Public Works shop was from the 1970s. This equipment, among others, was nearing end of life and needed replacement soon. So, to have funding support from the CEC program was not only timely, but also very much appreciated by myself and Council, and by Coalhurst as a whole. This program is a win-win-win for the environment, the Town, and the MCCAC’s mandate of helping municipalities reduce emissions and facility operational costs, while also making facility users more comfortable in these spaces.”
