OVERVIEW
As part of the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities program the Town of Hinton undertook a Feasibility Study to assess the possibility of adding EVs to their fleet, and potential charging locations. The feasibility study was completed by ATCO, and the Town received $6,000 from the Action Centre to help offset a portion of the project cost.
This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.
APPROACH
The study encapsulated a multifaceted analysis, encompassing facility considerations, electrical capacities, constructability, and a comprehensive fleet examination. The aim was to lay the groundwork for a robust EV charging network while optimizing the town’s municipal fleet for efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
The Town’s facilities underwent detailed analysis, considering factors such as constructability, electrical serviceability, and practical parking space considerations. Four potential sites were evaluated, with the Infrastructure Services Building (ISB), Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), and Civic Centre emerging as prime candidates for establishing a charging hub.
Intricacies of fleet analysis, including Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) assessments, were also conducted to pinpoint suitable candidates for EV adoption.
RESULTS
Both the ISB and Civic Centre were identified as ideal locations for EV infrastructure.
The study presented a holistic strategy for Hinton, combining facility analysis, fleet evaluation, and detailed infrastructure considerations. By identifying optimal charging locations and prioritizing fleet electrification, Hinton positions itself on a trajectory toward sustainability, reduced operating costs, and a greener future.
The increasing prominence of Electric Vehicles (EVs) as an eco-friendly alternative necessitates a careful and strategic approach to infrastructure planning. Hinton seeks to align itself with this paradigm shift by embarking on a comprehensive study to identify suitable locations for EV charging hubs and to analyze the fleet’s potential for electrification.
