Town of Slave Lake Multi-Recreation Centre – Lighting Retrofit  

Overview 

As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the Town of Slave Lake completed an LED lighting retrofit throughout the Multi-Recreation Centre. 

The Multi-Recreation Centre is a recreation multiplex that has been constructed in phases. The older portions of the building were built in the 1970s, with additions in the 1980s and 2010. The Multi Recreation building houses two ice rinks, a fieldhouse, dressing room facilities, concession, retail space, and offices. 

The project was commissioned in January 2023. 

Approach 

The lighting retrofit project included the replacement of 144 T5s and T8s with 144 LED T8 lamps. The new LED lamps will provide higher lumen levels at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary. 

Results 

The lighting retrofit resulted in a reduction of 36 tCO₂/year and an annual energy cost saving of $8,620.51/year thus decreasing electricity costs. There is a 57% GHG reduction from the existing system and a 2% reduction facility-wide from the baseline. 

MRC facility recently completed lighting upgrades. The new LED lighting is much brighter. Through the support of the REC program and MCCAC, we were able to complete previously identified energy conservation measures to improve energy efficiency in our facility. The upgrades will bring operational cost savings and carbon footprint reduction.
