Greenhouse gas emissions reductions for this project are calculated based on Alberta’s Carbon Offset Emission Factors Handbook Version 2.0

OVERVIEW

As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the Town of Vegreville has replaced four outdated furnaces with more energy efficient models and smart thermostats. The new furnaces were installed at the Vegreville Aquatic and Fitness Centre and was commissioned in 2023.

This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.

APPROACH

The new furnaces replaced four less efficient and outdated units. The new furnaces and thermostats are much more energy efficiency and will be able to react to changing building temperatures quicker and more effectively. As a result, the new furnaces will reduce natural gas consumption, and heating costs.

RESULTS

The installation of the new furnaces resulted in a reduction of 10 tCO2/year and an energy cost savings of $1,159.05/year. The project resulted in a 21% GHG reduction from the previous system and an 1% reduction facility-wide compared to the baseline.

“With another increase to the Federal Carbon Tax on the horizon, it’s incredibly important that we aim to operate our facilities as efficiently as possible. Upgrading the Aquatic Centre’s furnaces will not only reduce our municipality’s carbon footprint but will lower heating costs and I’d like to thank the M.C.C.A.C. for their financial contribution to this project.”

Tim MacPhee, Mayor, Town of Vegreville

“While this hasn’t been a typical start to winter thanks to milder temperatures, we have already noticed savings when it comes the building’s heating costs. It’ll be interesting to see exactly how substantial the savings will be as we get deeper into winter and start to experience the January and February cold snaps.”
