OVERVIEW
As part of the MCCAC’s Recreation Energy Conservation (REC) program, the Town of Hanna completed a lighting retrofit at the Hanna Agri-Sports Complex, updating 372 existing lamps to LED equivalents. The project was completed in June 2021.
APPROACH
The Centennial Place lighting retrofit project included the replacement of 372 T8s and metal halides to 300 LED troffers, wallpacks and highbays. The LED lamps will provide higher lumen levels at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary. In addition, there were 72 fixtures that were permanently decommissioned due to the retrofit.
RESULTS
Due to the brighter LEDs lower wattage, the Hanna Agri-Sports Complex retrofit project resulted in a 44% reduction in the facility’s lighting energy use. This retrofit is estimated to save 24 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equating to a 4% reduction in the facility’s carbon footprint.
“Hanna Minor Hockey Association is incredibly pleased with the new lighting at the arena. The lights are much brighter, creating a more visible ice surface, and reducing shadows. The smaller, cleaner design of the lights is also of a benefit, the fewer obstacles in the roof the better. The lights are far more user friendly as well if the power ‘bumps’ the lights come back on instantly. The old style had to warm up first before turning completely on. Overall, the new lights at the arena are brighter, more efficient, and more user friendly. We greatly appreciate the upgrade.”
Doug MacKinnon, President for Hanna Minor Hockey Association
“This is key in maintaining our operating costs for an affordable facility. In addition, the new LED lights for the ice surface will provide us with greater user comfort – as well as substantial energy savings. The old mercury lights were slower coming on and did not provide as great of lumens for light, and if they were turned off, there was a delay in when they could come back on. With our new LED lights we have better lighting on the playing surface and the lights can be turned off and on instantly.”
