Overview
As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, Strathcona County completed an LED lighting retrofit throughout Millenium Place. Built in the year 2000 with a gross area of 389,653 ft², the facility primarily consists of a pool, a lobby, a food court, a set of activity rooms, a playground area, two hockey arenas, a leisure skate area, two soccer fields, a wellness workout area, a physio clinic, a youth lounge, and a youth gym.
The project was commissioned in October 2022.
Approach
The lighting retrofit project included the replacement of 1,564 T8s, and metal halide fixtures with 1,312 LED troffers, highbays, and linear fixtures. The new LED lamps will provide higher lumen levels at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary.
Results
The lighting retrofit resulted in a reduction of 394 tCO2/year and an annual energy cost saving of $69,273.88/year thus decreasing electricity costs. There is a 58% GHG reduction from the existing system and a 6% reduction facility-wide from the baseline.
It is great to partner with the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre on these projects to reduce our environmental impact. Not only does the retrofit work to lower emissions, but it also saves the County money on electricity. With the escalating costs of energy, we know this is more important than ever. Every taxpayer dollar must count.
