OVERVIEW
As part of the MCCAC’s Electric Vehicle Charging Program (EVCP), the Town of Raymond installed electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the following facilities for public use. These are the first EV charging stations to be installed in the Town.
Public Use
- Two Flo SmartDC – 50 kW level 3 stations with two plugs each at Raymond Ice Arena
- One Flo Dual CoRE+ – 7.2 kW level 2 station with one plug at Raymond Victoria Sports Park
The project was completed in August 2023.
APPROACH
The Town of Raymond utilized the program to install two 50 kW fast charging stations on municipal properties: two at the Ice Arena and one level 2 at Victoria Sports Park, a community sports field hosting one of Canada’s Premier Football pitches. Raymond proudly holds the distinction of being the first municipality in Canada to achieve net-zero status. Currently offsetting all power consumption through community-owned solar installations, the town is actively pursuing the goal of making the entire community net-zero. Simultaneously, they are steadily transitioning their municipal fleet to electric vehicles. In 2020, the town replaced all golf carts with electric models and acquired one EV for municipal staff use. These two chargers not only support the growth of charging infrastructure for the municipal fleet but also serve as a visible demonstration of EV infrastructure to the community, fostering widespread adoption.
This was a unique opportunity from our partners at the Alberta Municipalities. We’ve been doing a lot of work with them in recent years and were well-informed of the coming opportunity and jumped on it fast. It’s not everyday you get infrastructure 100% covered by grants, and we’re very grateful to them for making this possible.
Greg Robinson, Community Development Director
We recognized that more and more people are driving electric vehicles and that this number is only going to grow in the future. Since we’re working to become a destination for visitors, we needed that infrastructure in our community and found a way to make it happen that quite literally cost our taxpayers nothing!
Kurtis Pratt, Chief Administrative Officer
Our community has worked hard to build the amenities and infrastructure that not only makes it a great place to live, but to attract and host big events. With thousands of people visiting our community every year for things like amateur sports, it’s fantastic that we can do projects like this which add services without racking up debt!
