OVERVIEW 

As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the Town of St. Paul added a new air handling unit (AHU) with heat recovery capabilities. The AHU was installed at the St. Paul Aquatic Centre and was commissioned in 2023.

This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.

APPROACH 

The new AHU replaced a less efficient and outdated air handling unit. The new AHU has a much efficiency and can recover waste heat from return air and return it to the supply air at an efficiency of roughly 67%. As a result, the AHU will reduce natural gas consumption through higher efficiency and heat recovery.

RESULTS 

The installation of the AHU resulted in a reduction of 161 tCO2/year and an energy cost savings of $27,918.73/year. The project resulted in a 73% GHG reduction from the previous system and an 26% reduction facility-wide compared to the baseline.
