Greenhouse gas emissions reductions for this project are calculated based on Alberta’s Carbon Offset Emission Factors Handbook Version 3.1

Overview

As part of the Community Energy Conservation (CEC) program, Lacombe County received a rebate towards the purchase and installation 142 new LED light fixtures and new weather stripping on 21 bay doors at the Lacombe County Public Works Shop. The new lights are much more efficient than the previous equipment and the new weather stripping will prevent much of the building’s heat from escaping through the gaps in the bay doors. As a result, the County is expected to save 33,001 kWh of electricity and 842 GJ of natural gas annually.

Approach

Lacombe County approached the MCCAC to complete the project with the intent to replace dated equipment, reduce energy usage, reduce GHG emissions, and save money. The improved lighting and weather stripping will have a positive impact on County staff, especially in the winter.

Results

With the new LED lights and weather stripping the County is expected to save $6,330 in energy costs and 59 tonnes of CO2 per year. These retrofits will reduce the facility-wide greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 13.3% annually.

“Lacombe County is taking proactive steps to reduce our environmental footprint while improving operational efficiency. These projects underscore our commitment to sustainability and demonstrate to our citizens how local governments can lead by example.”
