Overview
As a participant in the Community Energy Conservation (CEC) program, the Town of High Prairie has replaced five outdated furnaces and one hot water tank with more energy efficient models. The new heating equipment was installed at the Sports Palace and commissioned in 2025.
Approach
The Town partnered with MCCAC to upgrade the furnaces and hot water tank in the Sports Palace, aiming to replace outdated equipment working at 60-78% efficiency with high-efficiency condensing units. The new condensing furnaces have a combined capacity of 550,000 BTU/hr and are 96% efficient. They can respond to changing building temperatures quickly and more effectively. As a result, the new furnaces will reduce natural gas consumption and heating costs.
Results
The installation of the new furnaces and hot water tank resulted in a reduction of 107.8 tCO2/year and an energy cost savings of $16,290/year. The project resulted in a 10.7% GHG reduction facility-wide compared to the baseline.
“To have funding support from the Community Energy Conservation Program was much appreciated by myself and Council. This program helps municipalities with the ability to reduce emissions and operating costs and lessens the burden put on the taxpayers for these upgrades. The four furnaces and hot water tank that were replaced in the Sports Palace were at their end of life and needed replacement very soon.”
David Joy, Chief Administrative Officer
“Accessing an upgrade from our Simplified Retrofits List is easy and a smart way to make long-term reductions in energy use. We’re happy to have helped High Prairie with this easy win!”
Trina Innes, Executive Director of the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre
