Overview
In 2025, the City of Medicine Hat completed the Hill Pool solar photovoltaic (PV) system and sunshade project through the Municipal Electricity Generation (MEG) program. Supported by a $7,560.00 rebate from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC), the project involved the installation of 24 solar PV modules with a total capacity of 10.8 kW.
Approach
Firmament Solar completed the installation, which is designed to have a lifespan of at least 25 years. The system’s capacity and design enable it to meet roughly 5% of the pool’s annual electricity needs.
Results
The 10.8 kW solar PV system produces an estimated 12,423 kWh annually, resulting in approximately $1,900 in yearly energy cost savings for the City. Additionally, the system reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 6.1 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent each year.
“We were already planning the Hill Pool project when the MCCAC announced the grant, so it was a timely opportunity to add solar to our existing scope of work. The shade structure was then engineered to withstand the additional weight of the solar panels. The electricity generated will help us offset year-long utility costs even when the building is closed for the season.”
