Overview

In 2025, the City of Spruce Grove completed the Protective Services solar photovoltaic (PV) system project through the Municipal Electricity Generation (MEG) program. Supported by a $84,915.12 rebate from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC), the project involved the installation of 270 solar PV modules with a total DC capacity of 159.3 kW.

Approach

The Protective Services building opened in 2020 and was designed to be solar-ready with the appropriate conduits and roof space to accommodate a future solar PV install. AltaPro completed the installation which is designed to have a lifespan of at least 25 years.

Results

The 159.3 kW solar PV system is expected produces an estimated 135,000 kWh annually, resulting in $18,900 of electricity cost savings for the City annually. The system’s capacity and design enable it to meet roughly 20% of the building’s annual electricity needs while reducing facility-wide GHG emissions by 10%. Additionally, the system reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 66.24 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent each year.

“It’s exciting to see the addition of solar panels to our Protective Services building, which will support sustainability, improve energy efficiency, and help us reduce long-term operating costs. I’d like to thank the MCCAC for their support of this important work.”

Spruce Grove Mayor Jeff Acker

“Planning ahead matters. Spruce Grove made this building solar-ready, and now they are realizing the benefits of lower energy costs and fewer emissions. This shows how thoughtful long-term investments can deliver clear wins for the local community.”
