OVERVIEW
As part of the MCCAC’s Recreation Energy Conservation (REC) program, the City of Lethbridge completed a lighting retrofit of the Henderson Ice Centre, updating over 70 fixtures to LED equivalents. The project was completed in January 2021.
APPROACH
The Henderson Ice Centre lighting retrofit project included the replacement of 52 metal halide and 21 incandescent fixtures throughout the facility with 68 LED equivalents. The LED lamps will provide higher lumen levels at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary.
RESULTS
Due to the brighter LEDs, the Henderson Ice Centre now gets more light out of fewer fixtures, resulting in 5 fixtures being permanently removed and a 10% reduction in the facility’s total electrical energy use. This retrofit is estimated to save 25 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year, an estimated 7% reduction in the facility’s carbon footprint, and a 55% reduction in emissions from lighting equipment.
