OVERVIEW
As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo completed an extensive retrofit of the Casman Centre. The retrofit included two (2) new 95% efficient boilers and two (2) new pumps for a dedicated supply to the air handling unit (AHU) servicing office and theatre in the centre, new thermostats, and a building management system (BMS) to ensure that the AHU operations match occupant use and maximize efficiency.
The project was commissioned in September 2021.
APPROACH
The office and theatre spaces in the Casman Centre have very different setpoints and schedules than the rest of the facility. A separate smaller heating system was installed and connected to the existing air handling unit that serves these two spaces. Further, new BMS compatible control valves were put on the heating coils that work depending on occupancy and unoccupied hours.
RESULTS
The replacement resulted in a reduction of 20 tCO2/year and an energy cost savings of $1,739.18/year The project resulted in a 2% GHG reduction from the existing system and a 1% reduction facility-wide from the baseline.
