Overview

As part of the MCCAC’s Electric Vehicle Charging Program (EVCP), the Town of Smoky Lake installed electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the following facilities for public use. These are the first EV charging stations to be installed in the Town.

  • One Siemen 11.5 kW level 2 station with one plug at Pumpkin Park
  • One Tritium 75 kW level 3 station with two plugs at Pumpkin Park
  • One Siemen 11.5 kW level 2 station with one plug at Smoky Lake Arena
  • One Siemen 11.5 kW level 2 station with one plug at Town’s Office

The project was completed in March 2023 and funded through the MCCAC’s Electric Vehicle Charging Program with funding provided by the Government of Alberta and Natural Resources Canada.

Approach

The chargers will provide service to many visitors, including trail users, shoppers, conference attendees, wedding, funeral and celebration event attendees, sports participants, and their audiences, as well as visiting professionals. By offering this service, the community will be a choice location for the above users, serving their unique driving needs and continuing the town’s renewable energy aspirations.

The EV charger project will reinforce the community’s commitment to renewables and greenhouse gas reductions. This project is one of four applications from the region, to address the lack of EV services in the Smoky Lake Region and northeast Alberta.

This year, the Town of Smoky Lake is celebrating its centennial. We are recognized as the Pumpkin Capital of Alberta and the home of the annual ‘Great White North Pumpkin Fair’. This, combined with the Smoky Lake Stampede and other events throughout the year makes the town a “must visit” which is being made more accessible by the addition of our new EV Chargers.
