Overview
In 2023, the Village of Myrnam completed construction of their new solar PV installation, a 17.44 kW ground mount solar PV system at the Career Training Education Center (CTEC). The system comprises 32 solar modules and is conservatively estimated to generate 20,208 kWh per year. The system allows the village to produce renewable energy, lower its carbon footprint, and lead by example in the community. The system received a rebate through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Alberta Municipal Solar Program for $10,934.03.
Approach
The project was operational in 2023 and was constructed by Azgard Solar for $36,446.75. The expected annual electrical cost savings and rebate result in a simple payback period of 12.63 years against the 25-year minimum lifecycle of the solar array.
Results
The system will offset about 11.52 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually, the equivalent of removing 3 passenger internal combustion engine vehicles driven for a year off the road.
“The installation of the solar panels at our village’s CTEC building has opened the eyes and minds of our students and community to the limitless possibilities of alternative energy sources. The panels will significantly reduce the village’s power bill and will be a major driver in keeping the village viable and sustainable. By working closely with the school, and even having students attend council meetings, the social consciousness of these young people has been raised to the point where they are enthusiastically brainstorming to introduce new ideas that are eco-friendly and environmentally responsible.”
Mayor Donna Rudolf
“In the educational community there is a slogan that “it takes a village to educate a child”. The Alberta Municipal Solar Program contribution made this project happen, forever changing our community.”
