OVERVIEW
As part of the Action Centre’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM) Program, the City of Beaumont purchased a new electric Chevrolet Bolt as the field vehicle for inspectors to address citizen service requests, conduct asset inspections, and transport staff to meetings throughout the region. The City’s primary motivation behind the project was to demonstrate municipal leadership, reduce emissions, and reduce operating costs. This project was completed in May 2021.
APPROACH
The City’s Chevrolet Bolt is a new addition to the fleet. Included in the project is a 7.2 kW Flo G5 level 2 EV charging station with a standard SAE J1772 plug that will be used to charge the vehicle at the Beaumont Public Works building.
RESULTS
By switching to electric, the City will be eliminating any operational emissions, leading to a reduction in environmental impact, as well as significantly lower fuel and maintenance costs. This EV is expected to reduce overall emissions by 47 per cent compared to the average small car or hatchback and cut annual fuel and maintenance costs by over $1,700.
“I am excited to officially welcome our first fully Electric Vehicle to the City of Beaumont. Our goal with the newest member of our fleet is to help reduce GHG emissions within our community while focusing on being economical and environmentally friendly. I want to provide acknowledgement to Beaumont’s Operations team for spearheading this initiative. I also want to say thank you to the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre for making this a possibility by providing funding programs to rural municipalities which allow us to have the opportunity to purchase an electric vehicle. Together we will help reduce our carbon footprint within Beaumont as we move towards a better and more sustainable future.”
