OVERVIEW
As part of the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities program the City of Brooks purchased a new fully electric Zamboni 650 Electric ice resurfacer. The City received a $50,000 rebate from the MCCAC to help cover the roughly $196,130 purchase price.
This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.
APPROACH
The purchase of the electric ice resurfacer is a great step forward by the City in promoting environmental sustainability and improving indoor rink air quality. Over the lifespan of a comparable propane ice resurfacer, it is estimated that $100,000 worth of propane would be needed to power the unit; however, over the lifespan of the electric ice resurfacer, it is expected that only $13,500 worth of electricity will be required.
RESULTS
The purchase of the new electric ice resurfacer not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also offers economic benefits by reducing maintenance costs. The City can expect:
- Lower operating costs as electric ice resurfacers are substantially more efficient compared to natural gas powered units.
- Lower maintenance costs as electric ice resurfacers have fewer moving parts.
- Reduced GHG emission as electric ice resurfacers do not produce any GHG emissions during operation.
- Improved indoor air quality as no exhaust will be produced during operation.
“The purchase of an electric ice resurfacer reflects our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and fiscal responsibility. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) for their generous support in making this investment possible. By embracing innovative solutions like this, we not only reduce our carbon footprint but also set a positive example for other municipalities to follow.”
