OVERVIEW
As part of the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities program the City of Grande Prairie purchased a new fully electric Zamboni 552 AC ice resurfacers. The City received $50,000 through the EVM Program to help offset the $207,015 project cost.
This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.
APPROACH
The new electric Zamboni will replace an outdated unit at the See Design Works Centre. This is a great step forward by the City in promoting sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
RESULTS
The new electric Zamboni boasts several benefits compared to a traditional propane/natural gas unit:
- Zero emissions: The electric Zamboni does not produce emissions while in operation, reducing environmental impact while improving local air quality.
- Cost-efficiency: The electric Zamboni will contribute to cost savings through reduced fuel consumption and maintenance expenses over time.
- Quiet operation: The electric motor provides a more enjoyable ice rink experience for players and spectators alike by minimizing operational noises.
The integration of the electric Zamboni at the Design Works Centre highlights the City’s commitment to sustainable operations and innovative solutions,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “We appreciate the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s support in purchasing this new equipment that will contribute to lowering our carbon footprint while maintaining operations and ice quality.
